Common Invisalign Questions

What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that uses clear, custom-made aligners to gradually straighten teeth. They work by applying consistent pressure to shift teeth into the desired position over time.

How long does Invisalign treatment usually take?

Treatment times vary depending on the complexity of the case but generally range from 12 to 18 months. Your dentist will provide a tailored timeline after assessing your individual needs.

Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech?

Some patients may experience a slight lisp initially, but this typically disappears as you become accustomed to wearing the aligners.

Can I eat and drink while wearing Invisalign aligners?

It’s recommended to remove your aligners while eating or drinking anything other than water to avoid staining them and to maintain oral hygiene.

How do I wear my Invisalign aligners?

For the best results, you should wear your Invisalign aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day.

Instructions given to you by our dentists are tailored to your unique orthodontic journey.

If you have any questions or concerns, remember you can always contact one of our friendly staff members.

Typical Invisalign instructions:

  • Wear each aligner for a minimum of 22 hours a day
  • Remove your aligners to eat and drink, unless it’s clear, cold, non sugary liquid
  • Brush and floss your teeth before reinserting your aligners after eating
  • Use your munchies daily or more if instructed by the dentist
  • Remember to carry your invisalign case with you. If your aligners aren’t in your mouth, please have them in your case with your munchie. This will reduce the risk of accidental loss of aligners, i.e. getting wrapped in tissues and having them cleared away by a super efficient waitering staff!
  • Keep your previous set of aligners in a safe place until you move on to the next aligner.
  • Clean your aligners before inserting them with a soft brush and cold water.

Cleaning them daily with mouthwash containing hydrogen peroxide (such as Colgate Peroxyl) and soaking them with ‘Polident’ denture tablets a few times a week to prevent the build up of odour causing bacteria.. Do not put them in the dishwasher!

Is Invisalign treatment painful?

Invisalign aligners may cause some initial discomfort when a new set is first worn, but this typically subsides quickly. Unlike traditional braces, there are no wires or brackets that can irritate the mouth.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of Invisalign varies based on the complexity of the case and the number of aligners needed. Your dentist will give you a detailed quote after a consultation.

What happens if I lose or break my aligners?

Can I smoke while wearing Invisalign aligners?

Smoking is strongly discouraged while wearing aligners as it can lead to discoloration and affect the overall health of your mouth.

Do I have to avoid certain foods during Invisalign treatment?

Since aligners are removed while eating, there are no food restrictions. However, maintaining good oral hygiene after eating is crucial.

How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

Clean your aligners with a soft-bristle toothbrush and water, or use Invisalign cleaning crystals or tablets. Avoid using hot water as it can warp the plastic.

Can teens use Invisalign instead of traditional braces?

Yes, there’s a specific line called Invisalign Teen, designed to accommodate growing mouths and includes features to help monitor compliance.

Will dental insurance cover the cost of Invisalign?

Many dental insurance plans cover part of the cost of Invisalign just as they would traditional braces. Check with your provider for specifics about your coverage.

What happens after completing Invisalign treatment?

You will likely be fitted for a retainer to maintain your new smile. Your dentist will advise on how long and how often to wear your retainer.
