How to Prepare

Our dentists provide a customised preparation plan before your appointment to help you achieve the brightest smile with the highest level of comfort and ensure your teeth and gums are healthy while minimising sensitivity.

We recommend patients come in for a checkup, scale and clean to remove any biofilms on their teeth and assess their overall oral health to determine if there is any tartar, staining, or other issues that could affect the whitening results.

What to Expect During Treatment

At Six Twelve Family Dental, we offer both in-chair whitening and take-home kits, depending on your individual needs and preferences.

In-Chair

If you opt for in-chair whitening, expect the procedure to take about 90 minutes. We use the Philips Zoom system, which involves three to four rounds of 15-minute light-activated bleaching treatments.

This process typically lightens teeth by 6-8 shades in a single visit; results may vary based on your clinical situation. Our dentist may avoid applying bleaching agents to very sensitive teeth. To help pass the time, you can watch a movie or a Netflix show.

Take-Home

These kits are a more cost-effective option and are suitable for patients who don’t require immediate results. After taking a mould of your teeth, we create custom trays that you’ll fill with the provided whitening gel and wear for 30 minutes daily for up to two weeks.

The take-home kits may achieve similar results; it can take 10-14 days to reach the same level of whiteness, and be more challenging to control where the bleaching agent is applied for those with sensitive teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do the results last?

You may start noticing changes in your teeth’s whiteness after about six months, depending on your diet. We generally recommend waiting at least six months before repeating the procedure, but subsequent sessions should achieve the desired results faster.

Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid after brightening my teeth?

For the first two weeks after whitening, try to avoid anything that might stain a white shirt to allow the colour of your teeth to stabilise.

Are there any dental conditions that might make me unsuitable for teeth whitening?

If you have severe periodontal disease, extensive untreated decay, or other active infections, teeth whitening may not be appropriate. Additionally, crowns, ceramic restorations, and other artificial materials bonded to your teeth will not change colour with traditional whitening systems.

What should I do if I experience sensitivity or discomfort after brightening?

We provide desensitising agents to take home after both in-chair and take-home whitening procedures and will go through the instructions for their use with you.

Can I brighten my teeth if I have braces or a permanent retainer?

Braces and other attachments bonded to your teeth must be removed before whitening, as the bleaching agent only works on your natural tooth structure.
